While there are plenty of pet owners who treat their animals as their children and family members and keep them for a lifetime, it’s a sad fact that many others decide that the pet can no longer stay with them.

Let’s not forget that many of you find strays on the streets and find out they don’t have owners. You also might wonder how to find good homes for these angels.

If you are in Kuwait and have already taken the decision to no longer keep your pet or the stray you found, then here is what you need to consider first:

3 Things to consider

1- First promise yourself and the pet that you will find a good home for them and not just dump them at the door of the first opportunity / people you find.

2- Remember YOU are rehoming a dog, cat, parrot, rabbit..etc. You must be prepared to spend some effort to rehome it. These are living and loving and feeling souls. You need to make sure you put them in the best possible new home.

3- Rehoming Photoshoot: Shoot VERY (I stress on the importance on very) nice photos of your pet. Clear, not blurry, high resolution, bright, detailed, front side, close up, face entire body, sitting standing…etc. You get the point, the pictures have to be appealing to the person/people who will next take care of your dog. So increase the chances by presenting beautiful photos of your dog.

3 best channels to find a new home

So start planning and look into these 3 channels:

Online networking, social networks, emails, forums, ezines and online newsletters…etc

Offline: Talk to people, neighbors, friends, colleagues…etc

Shelters

So let’s look in details into each one of these channels:

Online Channels to rehome your pet in Kuwait:

So you’re looking for a new home for your cat or dog. Don’t underestimate the power of online networking. Here are great online pages and magazines that you can post about your dog or cat. PS: DON’T forget to include your telephone number.

Humans and Animals Facebook page (for cats, dogs or any other pet) – Check back on the post twice a day.

Instagram (if you don’t have one, it’s now time to register. Your pet is worth it). Tag the photos with #kuwait #kw #kuw #ku #kwt #q8 #q8instagram #q8ig #kuwaitig, and mention @animalblock & @alpetscom. And leave your phone number.

PAWS facebook group (cats & dogs or any other pet) – Check back on the post twice a day.

PAWS website (cats & dogs or any other pet)- Check back on the post twice a day.

Cat Owners & Lovers in Kuwait (only cats) – Check back on the post twice a day.

Kuwait Dog Lovers (only dogs) – Check back on the post twice a day.

Q8 Petz – Check back on the post twice a day.

Caution from pet abusers in Kuwait:

Make sure you interview the person who is willing to take your dog or cat. There are plenty of people out there who want to take your cat or dog and sell it. There are people who want to use your dog in dog fighting. There are those who want to use your cat to breed and sell his/her kittens. Spay and Neuter then you’ll filter out all those freaks automatically. Look all I’m saying, after all, you want your pet to end up in a nice and a good home right? RIGHT?

Offline networking to find a home for your pet in Kuwait:

Do you work? Are you a social person? Do you take part in social activities?

GREAT!

It’s time to talk to the people you know. Neighbors, colleagues, friends, relatives and anyone you know! Tell them you need to rehome your pet or the pet you found and again make sure they are committed people. The pet/stray will have a hard time to adjust to a new home, and if they will let him/her down again then that’ll be just too much to bear for your pet.

And finally!

Shelters that take your pet in Kuwait!

If all fails it’s simple, shelters are your last resort. There are 2 shelters in Kuwait

K’S PATH – they take 30 KD surrender fee.

PAWS Kuwait – they take donations to care for the pet.

DOs & DON’Ts

Do keep the pet with you until you find a good home

Do background research about the people who will adopt the pet

Do keep a phone number and civil ID info of the people who took the pet from you

Do consider boarding the pet for a few days until you find a foster or forever home at a boarding facility

Don’t throw the pet on the street. It’s a death sentence

Do spay or neuter the pets you rehome OR arrange them to be spayed / neutered by the people who are adopting them

Do vaccinate your pets/strays you find

Don’t give the pet to the FRIDAY MARKET. It’s a NO-NO

Don’t give your pet to a pet shop

Do try posting at least once a week on different online/offline platforms, as new people might stumble upon your post

Don’t give up if you don’t get a response immediately. Repeat the above and if you are persistent you will find a nice loving home for your pet.

So I published the story of the blind dog in a terrible condition Sarah saw when she visited Animal House with the other dog she took there herself and wanted to board with them.

I saw a comment on my story today. The comment is in arabic from a person who doesn’t introduce himself, but just explains that the dog was not in a healthy condition and was expected to die, and was kept in one kennel with another dog of the owner to keep him company. All that was a request by the owner of the dogs.

It’s a long comment in arabic that starts with a verse from the Holy Quran, and ends with a note saying that they will take legal action against Sarah, and me (and all those who are spreading the word and publishing the story she told).

Here is the comment he wrote:

I feel I need to tell my story to all the animal lovers in Kuwait to be aware of the horrific cruelty I witnessed inside the Animal House in salmiya.

About 3 weeks ago I rescued an old dog who was in a bad condition, as an animal lover I couldn’t leave it there, so with the help of some people we managed to lift the dog into my car. I immediately took the dog to Dr Andro who checked the dog over and said the dog was dehydrated and had malnutrition. Obviously the dog had been abandoned as it was friendly and gentle around humans.

Not knowing what to do with the dog I drove around. I couldn’t take the dog home as I already have four dogs and three cats in a two bedroom apartment with the neighbors complaining. So my only resort was the animal house as they take in dogs with no vaccines and microchip. I boarded the dog for 5 days until I could find someone to foster him.

When putting the dog into its kennel I noticed a German shepherd with a small poodle. The German shepherd was jumping and barking around in the kennel as the poodle was walking into the walls. However during the 5 days I paid two visits to the dog which I boarded, as my gut was telling me that something wasn’t right about this place. On my second visit I looked inside the kennel of the German shepherd and the small poodle. To my horror I saw a brown poodle covered in dog stool lying on the bare cold floor and could barely stand up.

I asked the cleaner to open up the kennel so I could take a look at this dog, that’s when he told me it was blind. As I approached the dog I honestly couldn’t make out what it was or what had gone wrong, puzzled and in shock I had to quickly make a decision whether or not to pick it up.

As I brought the dog closer to the light I burst out in tears and immediately charged into the reception area where people were waiting. I demanded to see the person in charge. A vet named Rania came out and asked me who’s dog it was. I replied ‘’what a stupid question, this dog is in your boarding shelter so how would I know? Another vet was then called out to identify the dog, by then the people who were waiting to see the vets had walked out discussed after witnessing the horrific sight of this poor dog. A third vet then came out who was also puzzled at first and tool a few minutes to identified the dog saying she had boarded it two weeks ago and was told it was blind. That was the last time she had seen it before it was sent into the boarding kennel.

Obviously this poodle had been left without anyone even checking on it and no medical care was given as the two eyes were pouring with green pus and covered with dog stool. The female vet attacked me and pulling the dog from my arms and pushing me out of the door screaming ‘’if you don’t like it leave’’. I put up a fight and refused to hand over the dog. The vets claimed they could not treat this dog as they had no money and the owner was out of the country.

I’m guessing it takes too much time and money to at least clean out the eyes daily and to clean the kennels. Obviously these vets are in this business for the money and not for the welfare of these animals. By chance there were teenagers at the shelter whom claimed they knew the boarding shelter’s son, so called him and handed me the phone.

I told him what I witnessed he replied he had no idea what was going on and he hadn’t been to the shelter for a few weeks. He agreed to meet with me on that evening so I left and returned two hours later. He welcomed us with sweet talk and said he was willing to change his place if we found him professional vets. He was more concerned about making money and was not even a bit concerned about the poor dog that had been washed and was shivering to death. The vets had ordered the cleaners to quickly wash the dog and the room in which the dog was put in before the owner came knowing that the dog was severely ill.

During the time I was there the owner hadn’t even attempted to see the dog until I told them to bring it out. The dog was dripping with water, smelling and pus still pouring from its eyes. The smell was so bad; it remained on my hands for 3 days. When the dog was brought out any normal person’s reaction would be shock but he didn’t seem to see the difference between what a normal dog and what this dog looked like. I pleaded with him to hand the dog over so I could get it proper medical help knowing it had no chance of surviving under their care. He said he would take care of the situation and reassured me he was willing to change his staff if we were to provide him with professional vets.

I wrapped the dog in a blanket and placed it inside a small cage with tears rolling down my face knowing that there wasn’t much more I could do for this poor creature. The dog didn’t want to go inside as it kept putting its head on my chest not wanting to part with me. The next day I received a phone call from the male vet saying the dog was doing much better. I decided to go and see for myself. The vet who had called me the day before said “NO MORE DOG GONE” for a moment I felt overwhelm as I thought the owner had picked it up. Then he said the dog “DIED” my heart sank, he said they buried him in the grounds.

I immediately called the owner but he was obviously too busy to take my call at the time and said he would call back ASAP. Five days later and I am still waiting for his call.

The dog went in a healthy mixed WHITE poodle but sadly never came out. It spent its final two weeks in a shit hole and never got to see the light of day again. Dr Rania and her colleagues are “DOG KILLERS” only working to get paid; if it weren’t for them this dog would have still been alive. If you are a true pet lover and really care for your animals please boycott The Animal House Salmiya and please share this message. Don’t let yours or anyone else’s animal end up like the dog in this picture.

Knowledge is power. People can make informed decisions when they know which stores to avoid, and yes by avoiding I mean to completely not buy anything from that store, and send a strong message that as long as you sell puppy mill puppies, we are not willing to give you our business.

Here are my favorite pets at PAWS & K’S PATH local animal shelters in kuwait, that I would consider adopting!

Summer

I’ve always had a huge crush on Summer from the day I saw her on K’S PATH’s facebook page with her picture after rescuing her from Fahaheel where the kids in the neighborhood managed to injure a couple of dog in the neighborhood. Her face is just so adorable seeking attention, expressing love and happiness!

If we didn’t have to leave Kuwait one day, I would definitely convince my husband to make this adorable baby a friend of our other 3 pets.

Summer is residing at the local shelter K’S PATH. If you adopt Summer, K’S PATH will give you the vaccinations booklet and she’ll come home with you after a vet check to make sure everything is ok with her at the time she leaves the shelter. She is also spayed, so you don’t have to worry about getting in heat, or spraying or getting territorial.

Here are some links to help you adopt Summer:

Mozart

Mozart is just so cute and adorable. Look at him! Doesn’t he tell you that all he wants is attention, love and care? I think if we could one more pet into our household to be good friends with our dog Cutie, and teach her to be calmer and quieter, then Mozart would be on our shortlist.

Mozart is currently at K’S PATH, but doesn’t have to stay too long. You can go and see Mozart and find out how you connect with him, an then if things click between you two (you three, or you all ;) ) then you can finally all be happy together. Mozart can have a place he can call home and family. It’s amazing how fairy tales are so easy to make nowadays! :D He’s vaccinated, neutered and ready to be a great companion! Go get him!

Duke:

Duke oh Duke! Who would say no to this face!!! LOL I love this confident cat. Love tails that rise up high with confidence and love. Love her eyes that look at you and tell you so much without saying a word. Love small cute triangle ears! hahahaha Where did you get those ears from Duke?

This is an adorable cat with a curios look on her face and will be such a great pet to be proud of!

Tuzic

This is one curious cute cat! We have 2 cats, one of them is very lazy and the other one is very active. Each has her own cuteness in her own way, but we definitely experienced more what a cat owners means to be after we had our second cat – Lalique. She taught us how cats can be affectionate, how they jump in your lap, how they can’t live without you and how they don’t care about anything in the world lol. Tuzic really reminds me of Lalique, and she really looks like a cat that will add a lot of action at home. Don’t worry it’s good action, just the type you’ll love!

Here are some links to help you adopt Tuzic:

Thai

OMG it’s the eyes. I fall for every dog that has these eyes. A little bit of the white showing, too submissive this baby. Definitely needs a loving home whose members will teach her that there is nothing to be worried about any more. No need to be scared and just enjoy life. Yes this dog would be a top priority for me if I had another empty spot at home. Both me and my husband love dogs and I definitely see us adopting at least another dog in the future, just not now. But you can save this dog from being a shelter dog for a long time. See how you can adopt and change adorable Thai’s life.

Caution: Do not make it a habit to induce vomiting in your dog at home. Better take precautions and prevent him/her from eating poisonous food and substances.

This is our dog, Cutie. Cutie would never stop eating. She likes her kibble, she likes raw dried pet food, yummy packaged treats, raw meat, she likes boiled chicken, she likes carrots, she likes cauliflower, she likes bread and capsicum and anything you can think of. When we sit to eat she’s there all the time. What can you do when you see these innocent eyes? You give in. We give her a bite or two and she knows if she persists she gets a couple more. So she also learned that the coffee table in the living room is a great place for exploration. We all know she picks up things from the edge of the table, I just underestimated her ability to get something she wants from the middle of the table. I was away from her for probably not more than 1 and a half minute, but when I came back I saw her chewing on something. I memorize everything, and remember everything i give our pets, so I knew there was nothing there to eat except the chocolate on the table, and then I saw the remaining pieces on the carpet and oh God oh I panicked!

I screamed and she ran off.

I calmed down and thought about a few things, and realized I had to induce vomiting so she would take out whatever she ate of it. I have hydrogen peroxide at home and I read everywhere that it the first option to think of to induce vomiting in dogs. It has to be diluted in water though and not administered more than 2 doses, so I didn’t want to make mistakes and I was unsure about the concentration so I decided to go with the salt.

called her again for a treat.

Poor baby! She came.

I put the salt at the back of her tongue and…..

I took half a teaspoon of table salt. I made sure I made her vomit as soon as I saw her eating the chocolate (not in case of clorox or any substance that has burnt going down already, you don’t want this to come up and burn what’s left. Run to the vet).

I didn’t get fooled by Cutie’s innocent looks that she’s fine. She needed to throw up the toxic chocolate. (a one small square bite of Chocolate in my case, which also had nuts and raisin in it – double ouch)

I opened her mouth and just dropped the salt at the back of the tongue, no need to toss it in the throat and hurt the tissue. I had to be super gentle. Then I apologized from her so she knows I wasn’t trying to hurt her. Poor baby.

I got a lot of ‘disgusted facial expressions’. Very normal.

I gave her some time (5-10 minutes) to throw up.

My first half teaspoon was unsuccessful in making her vomit. There was a lot of tongue licking the lips up and down and sideways, which is an indication that your dog is about to throw up. But she didn’t.

After the 10 minutes, I gave her another half a teaspoon of table salt. I was really on my toes, salt is bad for dogs. If that one teaspoon didn’t make her vomit I had to rush to the vet.

You can see not a very happy doggy. Getting eww, yucky and feeling sick to the stomach.

I’m still waiting…

More waiting, and then I left her alone for a few minutes to feel comfortable to throw up. Not too long though. You never know if she decides to ingest back what she threw up. ewww

So I return to look at her and voila! :D Happy mommy! Disgusted doggy!

I gave her some yogurt to relax her stomach.

Ewww stuff coming up. Don’t scroll or look down.

Ok see the chocolate and the raisin there? I’m glad I induced vomiting. I know salt is not good for them, but I just can’t risk the chocolate staying in her stomach. Just can’t take that chance.

So on a fine evening you are walking around the block and you spot what looks like a very friendly cat (or a dog). At first you think it must be one of the thousands of cats (or dogs) who live on the streets, but then you look at it again and something is different about this one. It doesn’t look very familiar with the street (hidden) rules. It looks like it was someone’s pet and now it’s lost!

So what do you do if you find a pet that seems like it’s lost?

1. Ask your neighbors and the people around you if they know the owner

2. Put up posters around the neighborhood

3. Post photos and ads on the internet and social networks (Instagram,Facebook,..etc)

4. Take it to the vet to check if it has a microchip

You will hopefully find the owners in these simple 4 steps and this is a reminder to people to microchip their pets.

Thanks

You got that right. Every day for an entire 5 months EVERY YEAR (February to April & during the fall season), 150 days in total. Poachers in Kuwait kill 300000 migratory birds, out of the 750000 wild birds who use Kuwait as a resting station, not knowing the dangerous and hostile location they chose to rest. 2000 birds every day die because some sick people pull the trigger to shoot a bird for the heck of it. JUST FOR FUN! Can you imagine how shallow these people must be? They don’t need food, they kill the birds for entertainment!

Al Rai newspaper published the crappy piece of news yesterday with a title that said: “Al Rai accompanied Christine/Kristine when she burst out crying after all her attempts failed to convince the poachers from killing the birds”

Look at these figures below? Don’t they look like hooligans with their guns in their hands?

note: picture above taken from AlRai’s article on poachers

And while our neighbor Oman is turning into a touristic destination for birders (bird watching enthusiasts), Kuwait is known as the killing station for these birds. Read “The Killing Fields of Kuwait” by Mike Pope, a birder, a South African expat living in Kuwait. He is also the Chair of the Kuwait Ornithological Records Committee (KORC). He sent his post about the poachers to 10000birds.com website who published his post to their audience of bird lovers all around the world.

Mike mentions in his post that it’s not only about killing the birds but also destroying their nests and eggs in his post:

However, it is not only 4 x 4’s but shooters head out to sea in boats with shotguns shooting terns that breed on the off-shore islands during the height of summer. If that isn’t enough then it is much more fun to go stomping across the breeding grounds to see how many eggs you can break – come on, what is going on here?

Mike wishes he could see the below in Kuwait:

Different sources mention that Kuwait is a temporary home for 250 – 400 different species of migratory birds who fly from Europe to Asia and vice versa every year. Some of these birds fly over 50,000 km all year long and some of them keep flying non-stop for up to 100 hours. Just to come to Kuwait and get shot by these ignorant b@$t@r&$.

Some of the shot birds by the poachers – photos taken by Mike Pope in Kuwait.

Golden Oriole Oriolus oriolus (below)

European Roller Coracias garrulus (below)

Kuwait is sitting and doing absolutely nothing while thousands of birds are dying every year, and the world is taking notice.

BirdLife International prepared a report and Kuwait is mentioned as a stopover site for the sociable lapwing who is one of the protected species in the BirdLife International Preventing Extinctions Program. The report says:

The latest reports from the region are the first to confirm the killing of Sociable Lapwings in Kuwait. The birds appear to have been shot on 12th March. Tim Stowe, the RSPB’s Director of International Operations, says: “Regrettably, this is the first confirmed hunting of Sociable Lapwings in Kuwait, and this latest information is of particular concern as these birds were returning to Kazakhstan where they would have started to breed in six weeks’ time.”

But obviously poachers in Kuwait killed them before they could breed. Shameful.

Here is a list I made of the many individuals and organizations who are genuinely interested in protecting the migratory birds in Kuwait:

They are people and organizations you can connect with for anything related to the birds in Kuwait. May be you all can even unite to do something about this madness. It has to stop!

Picture from dreamer-angela.blogspot.com

I know many many of you who blindly support no-kill shelters because they strongly believe that each and every animal deserves a chance in life, and that chance must be given to each animal regardless of its situation, medical condition, behavior…etc. I am no advocate of any type of shelter, I know they are all doing a tough job and as long as they are doing what they are believing in they are all heros in my eyes.
Just like no one interferes in any random family’s business whose members decides to pull the plug off from an old grandfather who is alive because of life-support, I don’t believe that anyone has the right to tell the people who are running a shelter to practice something and not the other.

I would also like to mention that PAWS Kuwait is a no-kill shelter (which often means they will have to turn down animals in need of being at the shelter because they are full), and K’S PATH is an open-door shelter (which means they accept ANY animal that needs help on any random day, which means they put some animals down: those who don’t have a chance medically to survive, or those who don’t pass certain test..etc).

Anyways, the piece of writing below is published by PETA (a non-profit organization who kills thousands of cats and dogs every year), so I’m not very fond of them myself. However they do make a lot of sense when they explain what it means to run a no-kill shelter, and the no-kill ‘dream’ takes its toll on some of the animals that enter this ‘magical’ shelter or prison? Read the below and you’ll know what I’m talking about:

Animal Rights Uncompromised: ‘No-Kill’ Shelters

Some people such as alleged animal rights activist Nathan Winograd, have suggested that the solution to animal overpopulation lies with so-called “no kill,” or “limited-admission,” animal shelters. However, these shelters are deceptive at best. Animals at “no-kill” shelters who have been deemed unadoptable may be “warehoused” in cages for years. They become withdrawn, severely depressed, or aggressive, and this further decreases their chances for adoption. Cageless facilities avoid the cruelty of constant confinement but unintentionally encourage fighting and the spread of disease among animals.

One PETA staffer who used to manage a “no-kill” shelter had a change of heart after seeing a pit bull who had lived in a cage for 12 years. He had gone mad from confinement and would spend the day slamming his body against the sides of his cage, becoming so enraged that the workers were afraid to handle him. After witnessing this miserable life, she realized that some fates truly are worse than death.

“No-kill” shelters and “no-kill” rescue groups often find themselves filled to capacity, which means that they must turn animals away. These animals will still face untimely deaths—just not at these facilities. In the best-case scenario, they will be taken to another facility that does euthanize animals. Some will be dumped by the roadside to die a far more gruesome and horrible death than an injection of sodium pentobarbital would provide. Although it is true that “no-kill” shelters do not kill animals, this doesn’t mean that animals are saved. There simply aren’t enough good homes—or even enough cages—for them all.

Open-admission shelters are committed to keeping animals safe and off the streets and do not have the option of turning their backs on the victims of the overpopulation crisis as “no kill” shelters do. No one despises the ugly reality of euthanizing animals more than the people who hold the syringe, but euthanasia is often the most compassionate and dignified way for unwanted animals to leave the world. Learn how PETA Saves Animals.

I read on 965malls today who also stumbled upon the news on BananaQ8 that according the this online Arabic newspaper called Al-Kuwaitiah, the Ata’a group (Ata’a in arabic means giving, and after a fast google search, I came to the conclusion that this is a non-profit organization that relies mainly on donators, and works on helping those in need) is launching an animal emergency ambulance in Kuwait next Saturday 23 March 2013.

Now the strange part in the article is exactly this statement which I’m roughly translating from Arabic to English (don’t worry I’m not twisting any facts): “And Ahmad Al Farsi (Chairman of Al Ata’a group) mentioned that the concept belongs to (an entity they called) Society for the Protection and care of the animals in Kuwait and their location is in Kabd/Chabd”

Ok so here’s what’s confusing me: The Society for the Protection of the animals for the protection and care of the animals. Is this K’S PATH or is this PAWS? Now let’s say this doesn’t matter. What matters at the end is that there will be an ambulance that will pick up injured/emaciated/helpless strays and animals from the streets of Kuwait. The article says the animals will be sent to a veterinary clinic/hospital to receive medical treatment. Fine. And what happens after that? Where do the animals go? Who is this Al Ata’a group associated with? Will any of the shelters take the animals from them after they are discharged from the hospital? Or does Al Ata’a group deal with the PAAFR (Public Authority Of Agricultural Affairs Fish Resources) in Kuwait? Will the animals be handed to the PAAFR after they are treated? Will the PAAFR put them down as soon as they receive the animals?

Don’t get me wrong, this is an amazingly happy step forward in the miserable state of animal rights laws in Kuwait, but too many questions are left unanswered.

PLEASE! Can somebody with more information about this help clarify the situation?
